BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya—This landlocked province’s first-ever state-run university marked the fourth year of the enactment of the law creating it with series of activities highlighting the achievements of this agriculture-based institution of learning over the week.
The Nueva Vizcaya State University was created four years ago out of the merger of two state colleges in the province – the then Nueva Vizcaya State Institute of Technology here and the then Nueva Vizcaya Polytechnic College in Bambang town. Their merger into the present university came about through a bill authored by Rep. Carlos Padilla of this province’s lone congressional district.
Sen. Edgardo Angara, chairman of the Senate Committees on Agriculture and Food, was the guest of honor and speaker during last Friday’s anniversary celebrations of the university, which was also highlighted by the groundbreaking for a new million-peso disease indexing laboratory, which is set to be the first in the country, at the University’s Bayombong campus.
Angara, also instrumental in the creation of NVSU, stressed that the 2008 budget has allocated a bigger budget for the state colleges and universities in order for them to make substantial and pertinent researches for the benefit of the country.
"With this increase in budget, the SUCs would be able to improve their services to their students and in addition, they must teach farmers to return to environmentally safe practices like returning mother fish to the environment," he said.
Angara’s presence also coincided with the NVSU’s recognition of outstanding faculty and nonteaching staff, wherein he was assisted by NVSU President Marilou Abon in giving awards to the recipients.
Earlier, a regional goat and sheep exposition participated in by various academic and nonacademic institutions in Cagayan Valley specializing in the propagation of sheep and goats was also held at NVSU as a part of the three-day anniversary celebration.
"In this celebration, we are highlighting what the university has done in the past four years of its existence and we assure our provincemates that we will continue to provide the needed service in research and development for our people," Abon said. CCL
